JUVÉDERM®

Wrinkle correction with Juvederm is a quick in-office procedure with immediate, natural results and minimal downtime. Juvederm treatments will make you look less tired, less sad, and make you appear rested and refreshed; just as if you’ve had a wonderful vacation or a good night’s sleep.

What is Juvederm?
Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are FDA approved injectable skin fillers which contain hyaluronic acid. This substance is naturally found in our skin, but it diminishes as we age. Juvederm injections can instantly lift wrinkles, folds, indented scars, and can augment the skin and lips. One treatment with Juvederm can correct contouring for up to one year. Juvederm Ultra Plus is a more robust form of Juvederm Ultra, generally used for correcting deeper folds and hollows, for facial contouring, or for more emphatic lip augmentation. It is more effective for treating folds in men, or women who are older or very thin. Juvederm is packaged and shipped from the manufacturer in pre-filled sterile syringes. Most people require one or two syringes of the product for complete correction, but this varies with the individual and what is to be corrected. Unlike some other hyaluronic acid fillers, Juvederm contains no animal protein, which eliminates the risk of contracting animal-borne diseases.

Juvederm Before And AfterHow will Dr. Davis use Juvederm to improve my appearance?
Dr. Davis frequently uses Juvederm to soften lines in the perioral region (the area around the mouth). She can lift the nasolabial folds; smile lines that extend down from the nostrils to the outer corners of the mouth. These deepen after about age 30 and when augmented, will make you appear less tired or sad. She also uses Juvederm to fill in the folds extending down from the outer corners of the mouth. These “marionette lines” start to appear around age 40 and when corrected can eliminate the appearance of a frown. Juvederm can also lessen the depth of vertical lines all around the mouth, which come after years of pursing the lips (from using straws, from kissing, and from smoking).

Dr. Davis can use Juvederm to augment your cheekbones, which will give more definition to a flat face and which will also lessen the depth of your nasolabial fold. She can inject Juvederm along the jaw line to minimize the appearance of jowls and can use it to fill in the hollows of your cheeks. She can use Juvederm to lift indented scars from chicken pox, acne, or trauma. Juvederm Ultra and Juvederm Ultra Plus are also among her most popular lip plumping agents, restoring you to a full lip or enlarging your lips for a more voluptuous look.

Juvederm Before And AfterWill my Juvederm treatment with Dr. Davis be painful?
The new forms of Juvederm – Juvederm Ultra XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC – premade with anesthetic, were FDA approved in February, 2010. They have replaced the standard Juvederm, and make treatment much more comfortable. Most patients can tolerate injection “straight” since the needle used to treat is very delicate. Some patients, however come 30 minutes before their appointment time to sit with a topical anesthetic cream (at no additional charge). Either way, the treatment is tolerable and the results so wonderful that people regularly return for repeat sessions of the same or additional areas.

Who does Dr. Davis treat with Juvederm?
Juvederm treatments are for both men and women, generally over age 30. Occasionally, Dr. Davis will treat younger individuals if lines are visible (such as in smokers or people who have spent considerable time in the sun) or if she is lifting acne/chicken pox scars.

Juvederm Before And AfterCan there be any problems after my Juvederm treatment?
Occasionally there will be bruising from the injections, but this will be less than is seen with Restylane/Perlane. Bruising can largely be prevented by avoiding aspirin and the products listed below. (Prior to your treatment, see ‘How should I prepare for my Juvederm treatment with Dr. Davis.’) There is less swelling from treatment with Juvederm than after Restylane and Perlane.

Rarely, you may feel bumps under the skin after your treatment. These can be massaged down with an antibacterial product such as Bacitracin ointment. You should know that Juvederm (and all hyaluronic acid fillers) can be dissolved by the injection of a medication called Vitrase. If for any reason you are unhappy with your results, you are not forced to keep the filler present.

Juvederm Before And AfterHow should I prepare for my Juvederm treatment with Dr. Davis?
Most side effects can be prevented by avoiding aspirin (note – this is sometimes included in certain cold remedies), baby aspirin (unless prescribed by your physicians), ibuprofen products (Motrin, Naprosyn, Aleve), vitamin E and multivitamins with vitamin E, alcohol (wine, beer, hard liquor), ginkgo, ginger, St. John’s Wort, and certain other herbal products that are known to “thin” the blood and enhance bruising. (See our separate page on avoidances prior to surgery)

We recommend that you purchase Arnica tablets, which can be bought at Metro Drugs, Whole Foods or other health food and vitamin stores. Follow the instructions on the package; you can start as early as a few days before your procedure. We suggest that you take them at least the day before and the day of the treatment. You may also want to take them after. Arnica gel is not nearly as effective.

Juvederm Before And AfterAn alternative supplement to minimize bruising after the treatment is Bromelain (pineapple extract). You can take 500mg twice a day for 3 days following a procedure. You should begin taking Bromelain the day of your treatment, after the procedure has been completed. Bromelain can be taken in addition to or instead of Arnica tablets, though Bromelain should not be taken before the treatment, only after.
